Re: Hume's Misconception on Miracles

I agree that Hume's definition of miracles leaves a lot to be desired. I'm hard pressed to come up with a definition that isn't tautological though. I think "miracle" is a subjective layer of meaning we ascribe to an event a la Pulp Fiction. I do however think that Hume's basic idea is a good heuris...

Re: Hey meta.

Heh, I'm finding the atheist board a pool of sanity compared with the Evo board at the moment. There's a particularly virulent troll there who can manage 100 posts a day and be online for 18hrs at a stretch with nothing but "Evos are pedophiles" & "Darwin was a mad nazi" posts as if slander will mak...

Hey meta.

I'm back. First off I'd like to apologize for bailing out a while back. I'd really had it with theology/philosophy and needed to get back to solid hard science to wind down. Is it my imagination or is the CARM atheist board less batshit insane these days? Seems there's a big reduction in blatant bel...

Re: Is atheism a threat to mom and apple pie?

Good points all. Can you guys confirm or dismiss an impression I'm getting around the fundamentalists of late. There seems to be a shift in attitude over the last 10 years or so. Formerly, it seemed home grown atheists ( as opposed to godless commies) were looked on as a curiosity more to be pitied ...

Is atheism a threat to mom and apple pie?

This from another board Their aggression makes me a bit worried about being a Christian in this country. I see in the rise of secularism and the increase of mockery and disdain for Christianity a potential danger. Where do you think the natural course of events will lead should the disdain for Chris...

Re: cheey monkey I have a job for you

Sorry I missed this post, if you pm me I get an alert straight to my phone. I missed the exchange on Armstrong as well cause I've not been at the atheism board much, that place is a fucking train wreck half the time with the bolshie neo-atheists and scripture spouting mental paitents going hammer an...

Re: Armstrong vs Dawkins

This is funny. From the lamentable Discovery Institute's blog. Saying that Armstrong "mangles" theism. http://www.evolutionnews.org/2009/09/dawkins_vs_armstrong.html#more who wrote that? what are his theological credentials? There are people who think God is a big man in the sky and they are very u...

Re: Armstrong vs Dawkins

I think science people like the great fool becuase he does know some things about scinece and he's such a cheer leader for it. He doesn't know shit about theology or philosophy. In my book anyone who thinks that you don't have to know about the thing your criticizing because you think it's stupid i...

Re: Armstrong vs Dawkins

who is armstrong? Karen Armstrong is an historian as far as I can make out, I came to her work many years ago when I read her "History of God". She's an ex-nun who has explored the roots and developments of the competing theologies that have run through the three Abrahamic faiths. She seemed to be ...
