Re: Can virtue ethics stand on its own?
This is more of a real question. While the theory has risen in recent years, one major criticism of it is the fact that without either utiliarianism or deontology to give it a principle, the theory becomes circular because it lacks a definition as to what it virtuous. However, I am wondering whethe...

Re: atheist Bottom line
On CARM there's a thread where Bigthnker is pulling his favorite trick again: God is an idea in the mind, therefore, God is only an idea in the mind. There's no empirical data to prove God exists, so therefore he can't be more than an idea. Ideas with no empirical proof are only in the mind. they g...

Well, there was a nice watercolor at "Sense of the Numinous" that I always liked.
Hi Meta
Hi Meta,
I thought I'd just stop by and say Hi. Hope you're doing well. I still have fond memories of the old "Have Theology Will Argue" and "Sense of the Numinous" boards.

Re: banned
I also got banned -- from CARM. I was banned for creating a bogus profile named 'Metasock' that did nothing but argue with Meta's bogus profile (named BJWheeler or something like that), but praised Metacrock. I thought it was great food for satire, but those Slick-sucking fools banned me for it. "Nu...

Re: Tillich on why you can't be an atheist.
I would say if someone defines God as "the depths of your life, of the source of your being, of your ultimate concern, of what you take seriously without any reservation" then that is different from the way people normally use the word God, at least in the Western monotheistic tradition. I think a g...

Re: Science has disproved religion
(1) God is not about explaining why it rains or where babies come from or anything of that nature, so the lack of physical evidence or empirical evidence is not an issue. It's a different kind of question.. I certainly is... nowadays. (2) there are lots of reasons why we need to appeal to God; for ...

Re: atheists not willing to believe
It is true that there are things I believe or accept in life without demanding a high level of evidence. The life experience is negotiated with a constant assessment of plausibility. If a co-worker tells me traffic was bad this morning, I may accept it -- 'believe it' without evidence beyond this. B...

Re: Tillich on why you can't be an atheist.
Why is it important for apologists to argue that one can't be an atheist, even in principle?
