Re: Dr Who and Religion

Sigh. I guess no one else here is a Doctor Who fan. But I would think it might be interesting to talk in general about fictional characters with deity-like characteristics. What other characters fit the bill? What is the allure of such characters, and what are the weaknesses of using them in film or...

Re: Dr Who and Religion

Ok, but what do you think about the Doctor's similarities to a religious Messiah figure? In whatever version?

Re: Pope Francis may have just saved the world

I think the real issue isn't valuing at different levels, but power. The powerful aren't going to accept a society where they lose their power. And money is power. Bottom line.

Dr Who and Religion

In a television series run by atheists and which criticizes religion, the main character in many ways is a religious figure, even a kind of Messiah. Check out this article:

Any thoughts?

Re: Pope Francis may have just saved the world

Without money, how can the powerful exert power in this post-aristocratic society? No, money isn't going to go away. I think Jesus was right when he said, "You will always have the poor with you."

Re: Dawkins cringe thread

I consider myself a Christian humanist who believes in separation of church and state. This makes me more or less a "secular humanist," though not an atheistic or agnostic one.

Re: Back in I.C.U.

I spoke with Joe on the phone today. We talked for about 15 minutes. He is still at the rehab center and will probably be there for several more months. He is recovering well, though, and the infection is cleared up. He is undergoing physical therapy to restore his muscles, and the hole from his tra...

Re: Do athiests exist?

That article cites some thought and research that strikes me as strong evidence against theism. We have an ingrained tendency to have imaginary friends? Do tell! Heh. I can only quote the popular saying: "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you." In other word...

Re: Dawkins cringe thread

Not only a bigot, but sexist. There's no reason to emphasize that Julia Sweeney is "the lovely" - in fact, it makes no sense in this context. What would her looks have to do with her world view? "The well-read" or "the highly competent" or something would make much more sense.

Oh, wow. I wish I knew more about what was wrong with him, what's causing all this. I don't know how to pray or what to expect next!
