Re: about moral realism
If, 'apples are the best fruit' is not a truth bearer because of the lack of a standard. And if it is a truth bearer to state it a fact that 'apples are my favorite fruit'. Because it can be true or false. Then when one says, 'murder is wrong', and it is a truth bearer. What standard are they using?...

Re: about moral realism
"this is true because ti's my view and it has to be true?" This is what it sounds like to me too (I think..). I was trying to say it better than how you did here, but have not thought of how to say it yet. It sounds like this to me~ "If one's moral view is not a truthbearer, then the next choice is...

Re: Objective morality
RY I had said, “And if so, isn’t it very important to differentiate between “self interest” as being at bottom and “society’s interest” or “the surrounding environment’s interest” or “the harmony of life” as being at bottom? I’m thinking that it’s really important to know what’s at bottom, what’s th...

Re: Objective morality
I thought this was interesting and possibly related to topic. dawn of social networks, evolution of cooperation http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=It-pHyDrkTM "....which raises the question, are there some people just looking for a free ride in the community? The freeriders would be expected to garner m...

Re: The is/ought thing
Another interesting thing is Jesus and the upside down kingdom. What the world says is good, the kingdom says is bad and visa versa.
So, it is entirely possible to live in a world where A is good but you think it is bad.

Re: The is/ought thing
And these truths have context. They do not apply to rocks and are therefore not necessarily true nor contingently true for rocks. These oughts are contingent upon a certain context I'd like to address this idea of contingency in the sense of dependence on context. The way philosopher Richard Swinbu...

Re: The is/ought thing
1. Those things that benefit and harm an organism are factual is-es. Who debates against this? 2. With few exceptions, the preference to live and thrive is in the very nature of a rational organism qua organism. This natural order is also a fatual is. Most people take benign self benefit as a given...

Re: Ryan, Romney and the Veil of Opulence
I never understand why it is assumed that the wealthy/powerful are not socialists in their own right. Inheritance, protected and enforced by laws, and so the state. Which accumulates and centralizes wealth, and so, power. The ownership of capital is an assumed right. The right is supposedly the defa...

Re: Objective morality
RY in reply to mdsimpson92 I’m not claiming that children choose contracts. I’m claiming that since self benefit is the proper basis for objective morality, and since rights reciprocity is generally in the best interest of rational beings to enter into, it is what we ought to do. And since our succe...
