Re: Hobby lobby and destruction of the self
Is it that simple? Isn't there an uber-individualistic aspect to it too? "Each person is a autonomous subject- therefore NO UNIONS - and as for the poor, well it's their own fault" I think the uber-individualism is a veil to mask what's really going on. The self is being reduced to techniques for g...

Re: Is There A Real You?
The one thing I found from the studies I did in graduate school, this topic is immense. You can't resolve it. It will just proliferate into a mission different things. I wonder if Jim remembers when I was doing all that "self study?" I set up all night arguing with a friend of his from Austin, whos...

Re: Is There A Real You?
. Does that conflabulate self (in the sense of personhood) with identity? Do we have to be able to identify someone for them to have a self? Is a nonidentifiable person a nonperson? If we took both Jim's to some prison and tortured them, would only the "real Jim" suffer? I thinks there's assumption...

Re: Is There A Real You?
You do if it involves consciousness as the essential b...

Re: Is There A Real You?
The way Baggini describes it is that the self is better thought of as a verb than a noun. Rorty discusses this in PMN (I think) as "trivially non-physical", in the sense that a process is not a material thing. But as for whether there's some detachable essence aside from the proces...

Re: Is There A Real You?
One important difference between atheists and Christians is the belief in the soul. The soul would be what philosopher Julian Baggini calls a "pearl" theory of self - that there is a core, irrespective of one's elements or parts, that makes you you. Here's a brief talk Julian gave on the subject. h...

The Hitler stuff is reprehensible. You've diminished yourself.Magritte wrote:Here is a dramatization of officers reporting to Metacrock that the fleetmouse has just posted in his thread:

Re: Centre of Theology and Philosophy
I have one. I bet you will both agree, he's a real philosopher, and for one who holds values like the one's we express I think all three of us might nominate him as least liked of all "real" philosophers: Daniel Dennett! Mind you, I don't consider Harris to be a philosopher. He is not even worthy o...
