Re: Rejection of Chrsitainty and Self Esteem
The easy Calvinist response is that self-esteem is not a Biblical concept (though self-love is). Self-esteem, or a "positive self-image," can often be a form of pride. Confidence is not wrong, provided it exists for the right reasons. (For example, there is a difference between "working in the stren...

Re: Redemptive-Historical Hermeneutic
Paul's letters say everyone in Christ has "adoption as sons" of God. In the original language that means someone adopted to full status as a freeborn male Roman citizen. We ALL have the same status. We are all "brothers and sisters" in Christ, with God as our Father and Christ as the Firstborn. The...

Redemptive-Historical Hermeneutic
All right. I lost track of where we got in the "Real Issue" thread, so here's a new thread addressing one basic question I had. I hope I have not turned the argument into a strawman. Either way, it goes like this. When Paul tells slaves, masters, husbands, and wives to do things in a certain way, he...

Re: No Longer Quivering/Take Heart Project
How do you feel about living in submission to a god who has cursed you? Well, as KR said, he cursed the ground and some other things. However, this is the same God who "became flesh and dwelled among us," "becoming a curse for us" so that we could have eternal life with Him. This same God has told ...

Re: Plantinga's Argument from Possible Worlds
Plantinga admits that the whole argument depends on the possibility premise. If you buy that premise, then you will buy the whole argument. ("If G, then []G" isn't really disputed.)

Wait a minute. I didn't know you actually agreed that Christ paid the penalty for our sins. Maybe we don't disagree as much as I thought?

Re: Basis of Theology - Biblical? Philosophical? Or. . ?
Well, at this point, Runamokmonk needs to respond, but if he doesn't, I understand. ...Or we could dispute the atonement. I'm not a scholar on the issue. I would say that a theology has to base itself in what we know of God--mainly from Scripture, but also from nature (beauty, goodness, etc.) and kn...

Re: Basis of Theology - Biblical? Philosophical? Or. . ?
I'm interested in the psychology of your choice, to be honest. For example, can you explain why choosing to do something for your own happiness, your own desire, would necessarily be a bad reason? Why do you, in making a decision like missionary work or not, have to be excluded from the relational ...
