My point is: a lot of the time, atheists (and theists) do this kind of thing when they are afraid of the conclusion they just read. You might think they're invincibly dumb and that all your time is wasted--but you might be winning someone's mind. Keep up the good work! ;)

(1) Rational warrant for belief.

warrant means something is justified. Like when a cop has a warrant to search your house they are saying "I have authorization to do this." In argument the authorization would come from Logic. So it's a way of saying "a ratioanl and logical reason to bleieve."

This means instead of discussing "you can't prove god exits" I think the issue should be "I can prove it's rational to believe that God exits. I don't have to prove he does, just that it's rational to believe he does.

HRG on carm 5/14/10
If you stopped here, there would be much less need for argumentation.

But when you go further and claim in effect that there is no rational warrant for lack of belief in god(s), grounds of being, transcendental signifiers and particular experiences being experiences of God - then it is time to step in and point out where your arguments fail.

Metacrock, I am not trying to straw man your argument. I genuinely misunderstood it, but your second post helped me understand much better. I really want to get something out of this discussion, so please don't assume ill intentions from me, because there is none.
I am justified in thinking there is a God becuase the experiences I have of God meet the criteria we use to determine the real. Therefore, I can assert the reality of God becuase God is the object of the experiences that that fit the criteria we use to determine reality.

That's perfectly valid Metacrock, and if I was in your position as you present it I would also believe. You are essentially saying "I have found good reasons to believe" (while being a lot more specific about what kind of reasons they are). But the deal is, I haven't had these experiences, nor do I see the experiences of others are convincing. Would you call my unbelief warranted?

Super Genyus on CARM
March 16,2011

The conceptualization of God as 'Being Itself' was, to my knowledge, first proposed by theologian Paul Tillich in the early 20th Century. It has been brought to my knowledge by the thoughtful poster Metacrock. If you can get through his posts (sorry, Meta, your writing style is a bit... difficult), you'll find that they are extremely intelligent in nature and they actually pose even greater challenges to non-believers than the arguments of more well-known Christian apologists. His conception of God is fairly unique and has required substantial thought for me to comprehend it in a manner that enables me to write about it.

When it is said that God is defined as "Being Itself," it is meant in opposition to the idea that God is actually a being, that is a distinct entity that is what Metacrock refers to as "the big man in the sky" concept of God. So, according to Tillich and by extension Meta, God is not a being. But, if God is not a being, what exactly is He? How can a definition of God be meaningful without being a being? These questions seem to me to be serious problems of this view, especially to professed Christians like Metacrock, who hold onto the idea of a personal God.

It's fair to point out that you present actual arguments that can be defended/refuted. It is also true that people take you seriously. HRG, myself and others have defended this even though there is disagreement in some areas.

In just about all cases, "No one takes you seriously" is false.
