Life is the intricate pattern of matter that manages to keep itself going. Anything that didn't manage to keep going is, well, dead. So we are alive, obviously, each of us being part of a pattern that started a very long time ago in some shallow puddle of mud. We have traces of this old pattern left inside each of our cells, in the molecular machinery that keeps cells supplied with the enough of the right energy and material and little enough of the wrong type of energy and material.
Are stars alive? Our star, the Sun, is a third generation star, having formed from the molecular and atomic remnants of previous stars that exploded. It's a pattern that seems to repeat itself, but maybe it's more like raindrops that always take the same shape for simple physical reasons.
But anyway, we're alive, and I'm pretty happy about that. Happy enough to report that my wife'll be having a baby this fall

. This is something that's been keeping me more grounded than usual, but whenever I take the time to reflect on the larger scheme of things this is the sort of thing that falls out. Most of the time, though, it's a strange and wonderful thing to see a new person grow from nothing, take up more space, and begin to move around and react to things.
I just thought I'd share this with you guys today and maybe brighten your day a little
