Here in my own hometown, Chinese officials visited our mayor and made veiled threats about losing Chinese "friendship" unless a private citizen who had put murals on his building supporting Tibetan and Taiwanese independence, were forced to take it down. The mayor, of course, told the Chinese officials what "free speech" was and sent them packing. Here's an article:

It's not often that my little town makes international news, so we're justly proud of our David Lin, the local businessman who sponsored the murals. But I cannot see how China can experience real creativity so long as it remains so oppressive.

Nice thought, KR, and I wish I could say that was true. But I don't know that non-oppression and/or equality, in any wider sense, is really necessary for a creative or cultural expansion, Just requires a certain amount of freedom and tolerance for a very limited group of people (ie the artists and their allies) -- just a little loosening. The European Renaissance would be a good example of that, with great inequalities between classes and very limited freedom and prospects for the ordinary person of the time. Right now, to use a modern example, India, while enjoying a cultural "renaissance" of its own on the world stage (as I was said above) still has only maybe 300,000,000 middle-class type people who live more or less like us in N. America, together with ~ 550,000,000 of the world's dirt-poorest who live on less than a dollar a day.

Nevertheless, that Bollywood style is catchin' on! Happy Diwali! ;)

Met-- I get what you're saying, but it seems to me that even if you are saying that non-oppression and equality are not necessary in a wider sense, you are still admitting that "a certain amount" of freedom and tolerance is necessary-- even if it is for a very limited group of people. Is China allowing even a "certain amount" that is not quashed by political censorship?
