This leaves the question: Will the United States and Europe get involved. Technically Britain and the US have a 1994 agreement to ensure Ukraine's sovereignty.

No, I figure there'll be tut-tutting, sanctions and diplomatic finger-wagging at most. China has signaled that it's somewhere between neutral and slightly pro-Russian on this. There won't be big moves from Europe or the US, unless there's a game changer like massive attacks on civilians.

right, Czechoslovakia all over again.

Difference is that I think Russia will only take what areas that already have a Russian majority, like the Crimea or some eastern parts of Ukraine. To go further would provoke further action. Also, I think Europe will be looking for alternative energy sources, like shale-gas from the United States to lessen their dependency on Russian gas.
